I consider myself a relatively new teacher (less that 10 years of classroom experience), but I noticed that every year there is a greater diversity of student needs in my class. I wanted to be able to understand my students needs better so that I could more actively meet them. I felt like I had been given very little training in understanding students with special needs and was relying on what the IEP stated, or what my support teacher told me, would be good ways to meet an individual's needs. I decided it was time for me to take a more active role as a teacher in understanding what Special Education is, what my students needed, what our education system in B.C. believes Special Education should look like.
